The class blog is a private, academic blog.
The class blog is to be used for sharing information that would otherwise be publicly available (e.g., news stories, data from US Census, etc.) or information that poses no threat to the privacy of actual or potential clients, students, faculty or staff. In community health, these principles apply not only to designated "patients," but also to individuals and groups who are not operating in an official capacity (i.e., they are not a spokesperson for an agency). If in doubt, have your draft post reviewed by course faculty before publishing. DO NOT include names, identifying information or pictures of individuals or groups you might interview for assignments unless approved by course faculty.
Violations of these principles are addressed in:
UMSN Undergraduate Handbook of Academic Policies & Procedures, 2012-2013 Appendix B - Student Code of Academic and Professional Conduct, Section 10: Disrespecting the privacy of a client
This includes using sufficient and/or identifying information about a patient, e.g.:
- Full name, last name, or position
- Patient data of any sort, including computer-generated forms that will be removed from the clinical area
- Discussing confidential information in inappropriate areas, such as elevators
- Discussing confidential information about a patient with third parties who do not have a clear and legitimate need to know
- Referencing patients on social networking sites and devices
Alleged violations will be reported to the Office of Academic Affairs for full investigation. Please refer to the Nursing "Undergraduate Handbook" for procedural details and a listing of potential sanctions.
