INDIVIDUAL POSTING DIRECTIONS
Over the course of the semester, each student will research, write, and publish ONE individual post for the class blog. For this individual post, students will choose their top three topic preferences from a list that will be provided to you in class. The posts will be due during the week for which that particular topic is discussed in lecture. Specific dates will be provided to you.
Logistics and How to Obtain Full Credit
- Try to select an original subtopic, unless you are looking at it from a different perspective or angle.
- "Current event" refers to those that have occurred in the past 3 months.
- Include an image with your post, and make sure to cite the source in the caption (use a hyperlink--click on "insert a hyperlink" below to see a tutorial about how to do this).
- Use in-text citations to credit referenced sources. Again, instead of including a reference list in your post, insert a hyperlink to the source in your citations.
- Your narrative should be approximately 500 words.
- Using the list of labels on the right-hand sidebar, label the post with your topic. Your name will be automatically included with the post because you are logged into the site with your email.
- Posts are considered "on-time" as long as they are published (i.e. visible on the site, not as a draft) by 11:59pm on the day they are due.
Individual Comments
Comments on your classmates' individual posts throughout the semester will be considered for class participation credit. We strongly encourage you to comment on the blog, in addition to in-class discussions. The blog moderator will summarize comment themes and questions for monthly class discussions lead by Dr. Ziemba. The last day postings of any type will be accepted is Sunday, 12/15/2013.
Logistics and How to Get Full Credit For Comments
- Raise a NEW point or idea. Simply restating the points already made and/or expressing a general "interest" in those points in not sufficient. Bring in a personal experience, information from another article you read, or if a statement has incited you, challenge or express an opposing viewpoint (in a professional manner).
- Comments should be no longer than 4-6 sentences.
Suggestions on Content
Try to pose these questions when considering your topic or when leaving comments (these are only suggestions):
- What health care, public health, and/or social work professionals are involved in this current event? What are these individuals’ and agencies’ titles and roles?
- How does this current event relate to--or differ from--specific course concepts?
- How (if at all) does this topic apply to the community that you work with? In what ways?
- What connection does this topic have to your chosen/preferred area of nursing practice?
Keep in Mind the Following
- Always be aware of HIPAA regulations, especially related to images. No details that could rationally identify a specific person should be used.
- Read over and edit your post for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Consider this blog a published document!
- Use proper in-text citations - plagiarism is never acceptable and will not be tolerated.
